And without betraying much trust, I'll just say that some of them are really put off with Gary's behavior to the point that they (the locals) refuse to do interviews or participate in documentaries (like this one) because they don't agree with what Gary has turned the race into. I can't comment on whether or not the ultra-runners are "pretentious" but I can tell you that the locals who still enter (when Gary allows them) and help him put the race on are anything but pretentious. The ultra-runners who have begun to define the Barkley are a completely different group-and Gary has really catered to them at the expense of the local network that built the Barkley and who still help put it on. I'm talking a lot of good-old boys from East TN (many with advanced degrees) who were interested in a unique challenge. It mostly attracted outdoorsmen & thru-hikers who were looking for an extreme challenge. It was pretty much a local/regional event for the better part of 2 decades. That's not the way the Barkley originally started. One thing I was struck with was that it almost exclusively focused on the non-local, semi-professional ultra-runners. I only saw an early cut of this documentary before it was released. That's kind of a super simplified, time-based version of C25K, and usually people just get an app, but folks can do it with a watch and a piece of paper if they want. At least one rest day per week is standard, and lots of people only run 2-3 days a week and still progress. Slowly add more running until you walk 30 min "conversational" runs with minimal or no walking per week for a few weeks, then you can consider adding days, speed, and a training plan specific to a distance you want to run (you'll probably already be running almost 5k on most of your practice runs by now!). Alternate like this for the rest of your chosen interval of time (say 15 minutes to start). Just run every other day, as much as you can without getting totally out of breath, then walk until you can speak in short sentences again, then run, repeat. I didn't understand it anyway, it felt alien and hostile to me.ĭo it every day for a month and your body will adjust to do it very well.įor those looking to get started with running: Do Not run every day if you are just starting out running or haven't run in years! That's how you get hurt (I know)! An actor in me had failed to mature and died in infancy, with cries and soiled sheets. I am an observer by nature, not an actor. There's not a big difference in however I live and die. So my mentality is long past the desire for any change. Then death is at your side, the natural order, the flow. It is much easier to fight against "your" life than for it. At a sight of a remotely serious challenge I know I will have an easier time yielding it than trying to claw it back. I have my life but I didn't fight for it a single day. Frankly, I'd transfer my life to someone who I feel can make a better use of it, provided that transfer be without hassle. It doesn't matter if you realize the situation or not. What a person receives for granted, they can rarely appreciate. We value what we earn with sweat, blood and tears. The problem is that we inherently don't value gifts. Want to submit a video which is not a documentary? Respect the community, and do not consign their comments to the memory hole.
